Good workouts at Durban July gallops

Bold Silvano (far side)

THE Vodacom Durban July gallops took place at Greyville this morning (Thursday)and all 19 of the big race contenders on display put in faultless workouts, with the exception of just one.

It is often difficult to glean much from the gallops as the horses generally work within themselves, but the old champion Pocket Power was one of the runners to catch the eye.

He led his stable companion Fort Vogue from the 1400m and looked his old self as the latter joined him in the straight.

Another horse to really catch the eye was Flying Tristram, who could be the most under-rated horse in the race as on paper he has very good Champions Season form.

He had his head down and was striding out superbly.

Irish Flame.

The question marks surrounding him are whether he will stay the 2200m trip, whether he would prefer a more galloping track and whether he can overcome his wide 18 draw.

The second favourite Bold Silvano put up the fastest time from the 800m to the finish, while Russian Sage impressed most pundits, who rated him a leading dark horse.

The favourite Irish Flame put in a very good gallop as did the likes of Lizarre and Orbison.

River Jetez worked well within herself with Love Is In The Air.

The only horse to fluff his lines was Red Rake who has the habit of hanging to the left. He veered outward in the straight knocking over a cone.

The 20th July contender, Service Ace, did a televised gallop at Randjesfontein.

The sangoma bone-throwing tradition yielded a win for Orbison followed by Fabiani, Vertical Takeoff and Flying Tristram.
